Should my cat be left alone for a few days?

Getting away for the weekend or a short trip can be just the reset you need to feel refreshed and ready to tackle whatever lies ahead.  Leaving for a couple of days might not seem like a long time, and you may view your cat as independent and someone who would be just fine on their own for a few days.  Even with plenty of food and water, should you leave your cat home alone when you are out of town?

While your cat may be independent, maybe even shy or aloof, leaving them alone for more than 24 hours at a time may not be in the best interest of the cat. The best option may be to have someone you trust who can check in daily, like a professional pet sitter, who can provide care and social time and also keep an eye on home security. Here are some things to consider as you plan your next getaway.

#1 Even the shyest cats crave attention

Not every cat is a playful, confident cat full of energy who needs loads of playtime daily, some may even prefer to not interact with a visitor at all.  Regardless of their amount of interaction, all cats take comfort in having a routine they can count on, and some degree of interaction with a caring individual.  Cats rely on:

-Established feeding routines

-Daily fresh water

-Clean and refreshed litter boxes

-Social interaction

-Access to sunlight/fresh air

While you may have automatic feeders, fountains and litter boxes, a daily check-in will ensure these are fresh, clean, full and operating properly.

#2 Cats can get stuck in the darndest places

Cats are naturally curious, it is in their nature to explore and as a result, may get caught in places they should not be.  Daily check-ins can ensure they are happy, healthy and have not gotten into any trouble. These check-ins can help with:

-cats trapped in closets or rooms

-cats stuck behind or under furniture

-cats who may have gotten outside

-health and wellness checks

-injury prevention

#3 Home Security check-ins are an invaluable resource

When you are away, regular check-ins on your home can be essential for the safety and security of your residence.  This includes:

-package and mail collection

-broken pipes/leaks

-broken windows

-ensuring your home is at an appropriate temperature for your cats

-clean up of anything that might be broken or damaged by the cat

In addition to having a professional check in on your home and cats, it can be fun to also check in on your own while you are away! Many people install pet cameras while they are away to say hello and check in on their kitties anytime!  Learn more about the best pet cameras here.
